Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate the effect of intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy on posterior blepharitis patients resistant to topical and systemic treatment.
Setting:
Retrospective study, Bayindir Hospital, Ankara
Methods:
Twenty-one participants underwent IPL treatment at 1, 15, and 45 days (D) following baseline (BL) evaluation were included. Ocular surface parameters including noninvasive tear break-up time (NIBUT), tear osmolarity, Schirmer I testing, tear meniscus height (TMH), meibography findings, lid margin abnormality score (LMA), meibomian gland expressibility (MG), degree of conjunctival and corneal staining, ocular surface index questionnaire (OSDI), standard patient evaluation of eye dryness questionnaire (SPEED), and subjective remission score (0=none,4=complete remission) were assessed in each visit. Results were compared to BL values.
Results:
Tear osmolarity, NIBUT, LMA, MG expressibility, corneal staining and SPEED test improved significantly from BL to D45 (P > 0.05). All patients reported reduced symptoms, and complete remission was observed in 81.8% of the patients by D45. There was no significant change in meibography findings, Schirmer 1 testing, TMH, conjunctival staining and OSDI scores. No ocular side effect was reported.
Conclusions:
In resistant posterior blepharitis patients, IPL therapy ameliorated symptoms efficiently and improved most of the ocular surface parameters.
