Purpose:
Describe the epidemiological profile, clinical aspects and treatment procedures of traumatic cataracts in our context
Setting:
Adult ophthalmology department, 20 august hospital, Ibn Rochd university Hospital, Faculty of medicine, Hassan the 2nd university, Casablanca, Morocco
Methods:
Cross-sectional study included all patients admitted in our department for traumatic cataract between june 2017 and June 2019
Results:
Number of patients: 180. The mean age was 25.7 years (SD: 4.8), 90% male patients. The most common cause was violence (49%) followed by work injury (40.3%). The traumatic agent was metallic in 50% of cases and vegetal in 38.5%. only 54.8% of patients came to the emergency department in less than 24 hours. 92% of patients had an initial visual acuity was less than 20/200. 80% of patients were operated during their first admission, 72% of whom were implanted
Conclusions:
Traumatic cataracts are frequent, with a heavy social and economical impact because if affects young adults. The ophthalmologist should be aware of any other associated lesion. We insist on the use of preventive means
