Abstract Details
Purpose:
Comparison of the astigmatism induced by the operation based on the 2.8 mm incisions in the clear cornea, performed by temporal and superior approach.
Setting:
Cross-sectional study
Methods:
A total of 50 patients were divided into two groups according to their corneal incision site (superior or temporal). All patients were analyzed visual acuity, refraction, keratometry, and corneal topography before and one month after phacoemulsification. Measured with corneal topography were the surgically induced astigmatism and the corneal astigmatism.
Results:
Both groups had significant improvement in postoperative uncorrected visual acuity and corrected distance visual acuity (p < 0.05) The mean initial corneal incision was similar in both groups (2.8 mm). There was no significant difference in the mean incision size after phacoemulsification between the 2 groups (p>0.05). The total, anterior and posterior corneal surgically induced astigmatism was similar between groups.
Conclusions:
No significant difference was found in the change in corneal astigmatism, visual acuity, and SIA between superior and temporal approach in phacoemulsification surgery. The phacoemulsification with 2.8 mm clear corneal superior or temporal incisions ara effective and safe method in senile cataract.
