Abstract Details
Purpose:
To report the incidence of cataract in children with Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) in a tertiary hospital in South India.
Setting:
Aravind Eye Hospital, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India
Methods:
A retrospective case review of all children diagnosed with ROP from January 2011 to December 2018 was done. Those who developed cataract during their course of treatment were included in the study. Details of ROP, onset and type of cataract, management and visual outcome were analyzed.
Results:
Of 854 children with ROP, 21 eyes of 15 children included. 5 males,10 females. Mean age at presentation 2.5 months. Most common stage of ROP was stage 5,4. Spontaneous resolution was seen in 4 eyes. No treatment done in 3 eyes due to advanced stage. 12 eyes underwent treatment (laser/TPPV/intravitreal antiVEGF). Average age of cataract onset 3.8months(<1year). 5 eyes developed cataract beyond 1 year age. Posterior subcapsular cataract was most common type of cataract among those who underwent surgical/laser management.Complicated cataract was common with advanced stage ROP. 8 eyes had stable retina.8 eyes had retinal detachment. 2 eyes developed phthisis,1eye developed secondary glaucoma, 1 eye developed optic atrophy.
Conclusions:
Cataracts may develop in children with ROP regardless of the modality of intervention. posterior sub capsular cataracts are commonly seen due to lens touch during retinal surgeries. Cataracts with advanced stage of ROP have poor visual outcome.
