Abstract Details
Purpose:
To report the outcomes of implantation of multifocal IOL technology in the paediatric age group.
Setting:
 Academic Ophthalmology Department
Methods:
Interventional case cohort of 4 eyes of 4 children between the ages of 7 to 13 years old a multifocal IOL was implanted at the time of cataract surgery. Indication was unilateral cataract in children with a developmental or iatrogenic cataract, who before onset had good visual acuity. Outcome measures are refraction and visual acuity.
Results:
Good visual acuity above 0.8 decimal was achieved in all eyes. Spherical equivalent refractive error was < 1D in all eyes in the perioperative period. No peri-operative complications were observed. Two post-irradiation eyes developed long term ocular surface problems, however a DCVA of 0.8 decimal was achieved. Long term myopization was seen in 1 eye. Follow up ranges between 6 months and 12 years.
Conclusions:
Judicious use of multifocal IOL technology in children beyond amblyogenic age may achieve good visual acuity and decreases dependency on optical correction during school years. Long-term myopization secondary to axial length growth can be adjusted by optical or refractive surgical correction during adulthood.
