Abstract Details

Purpose:

An eyelid speculum plays an important role for ophthalmic surgeries by maintaining intraoperative visibility. In cases of narrow eyelid clefts and cases of deep set, it is often difficult to remove eyelashes by draping to open the eyelid. In this study, the opening effects to eyelid widths using different types of eye lid openers was examined.

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, Dokkyo Medical University, Tochigi, Japan.

Methods:

Seventeens patients who underwent cataract surgeries (12 males, 8 females, average age 73.9±8.32 years) were enrolled in this study. At the start of surgery, eyelids are opened using three different types of speculums (Kratz Baracke titanium type (METechnica), EzSpec soft type and hard type (HOYA)). The eye lid opening ranges were measured by measuring the length between the center of upper eyelid margin and the center of lower eyelid margin. After that the averages were compared (Multiple comparison test).

Results:

The eyelid opening ranges using Kratz Baracke, EzSpec soft type and hard type were 14.2 ± 1.64mm, 14.4 ± 1.90mm and 16.0 ± 1.90mm respectively. There are statistically significances between hard type to Kratz Baracke (P = 0.006) and soft type (P = 0.012).

Conclusions:

The effect of eye opening differs depending on the type of eye lid speculums. It is important to know the characteristics of the eyelid speculums for performing surgeries comfortably.
