Abstract Details
Purpose:
To compare ocular biometric measurements of a new swept-source optical coherence tomography-based biometer (Anterion, Heidelberg Engineering GmbH) with those of an optical low-coherence reflectometry biometer (Lenstar LS900, Haag-Streit AG), and to compare predicted intraocular lens (IOL) power between the two devices.
Setting:
Hospital da Luz, Lisbon, Portugal
Methods:
94 of 94 patients scheduled for cataract surgery were examined with both biometers. Measurements of axial length (AL), minimum keratometry (K1), maximum keratometry (K2), central corneal thickness (CCT), white-to-white (W-W), lens thickness (LT), and pupil diameter (PD). Differences in IOL power were evaluated for the SRK/T, Haigis and Holladay 1 formulas. Agreement between the devices was evaluated using the Pearson correlation coefficient and Bland–Altman plots. Differences were assessed using the paired t-test.
Results:
Mean patient age was 67 ± 10 years-old (range 44 to 81). AL measurement was possible in 90 (95.7%) of eyes using the Lenstar and in all the eyes using the Anterion. There were significant differences between the two biometers for the variables AL, CCT, W-W, LT and PD. Correlation coefficients were: AL 1.000, K1 0.966, K2 0.980, CCT 0.977, W-W 0.627, LT 0.788 and PD 0.498. Differences 0.50 D in IOL power between the two devices were observed in 22 (23.4%), 37 (39.4%) and 37 (39.4%) of eyes for the SRK/T, Haigis and Holladay 1 formulas, respectively.
Conclusions:
Although correlations in measurements of the two studied biometers were high, there were significant differences in most variables between the two biometers as well as in predited IOL power.
