Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate the effect of a high-vacuum setting versus a low-vacuum setting on the efficiency of phacoemulsification at low fluidic parameters.
Setting:
Fyodorov Eye Microsurgery Federal State Institution, Novosibirsk Branch, Russia
Methods:
Sixty eight patients with cataract were included in the analysis. Phacoemulsification was performed using Centurion with monitored forced infusion. The cataractous lens was split into 2 heminuclei using the stop-and-chop technique. In the first heminucleus, phacoemulsification and aspiration used a high-vacuum setting (500 mm Hg). In the other heminucleus, a low-vacuum setting (300 mm Hg). The order of using the high and low vacuum settings alternated. Intraocular pressure levels was set 30 mm Hg, aspiration - at 20 mL/min, and torsional power - at 50%. The main outcome measures were cumulative dissipated energy (CDE) and active heminucleus removal time.
Results:
The active heminucleus removal time and CDE were lower with the high-vacuum setting than with the low-vacuum setting
Conclusions:
Phacoemulsification machine with monitored forced infusion allows to safely and efficiently perform cataract surgery using high vacuum setting at low fluidic parameters.
