Abstract Details
Purpose:
To assess whether axial length (AL), measured by two different optical biometers, namely IOLMaster 500 and IOLMaster 700 by Zeiss, could provide different results.
Setting:
University Eye Clinic, Department of Medicine, Surgery and Dentistry, “Scuola Medica Salernitana”, University of Salerno.
Methods:
Patients that underwent planned cataract surgery, performed between December 2019 and January 2020, were included in the present study. 77 eyes of 55 patients (28 males) were selected. One month after the surgery, the ophthalmic examination was repeated in both eyes, including biometry with both devices.
Differences in AL between the two instruments were estimated, statistical evaluation was performed utilizing SPSS software.
Results:
With IOLMaster 500 the AL with pseudophakic option ranged from 20.35 to 30.8 mm (mean =23.54 ± 1.81 mm), with IOLMaster 700 the AL with pseudophakic option ranged from 20.35 to 30.8 mm (mean =23.55 ± 1.82 mm). The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test provided a normal distribution for both instruments. The AL differences with pseudophakic option in the operated eyes ranged from -0.09 to +0.06 mm (mean =-0.01 ±0.02 mm) (p inferior to 0.001, paired T Test).
Conclusions:
IOLMaster 500 and IOLMaster 700 measure AL in pseudophakic eyes with small but statistically significant differences, suggesting that even with IOLMaster 700 there is an AL reduction after cataract surgery.
