Abstract Details
Purpose:
Investigation of the effects of topical coenzyme Q10, vitamin E D-α-tocopherol polyethylene glycol 1000 succinate, hypromellose used in cataract surgery on the postoperative corneal edema healing process and its contribution to visual rehabilitation.
Setting:
The study was conducted from June 2018 to December 2018 at the Eye Clinic of Ankara Numune Training and Research Hospital, Turkey.
Methods:
The protocol was arranged retrospectively. The subjects who were topically administered with CoQ10 2-3 days before surgery were labeled as “CoQ10 Group”(n=30) whereas those without the usage of the eyedrop were labeled as the “Control Group”(n=30). Age and sex of the patients, their preoperative best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), biomicroscopic, lens and fundus examinations, intraocular pressure (IOP) measurements, central corneal endothelial cell analysis and central corneal thickness (CCT) measurements, anterior chamber depth and the cumulative dissipated energy (CDE) values were recorded. The data of postoperative follow-up visits on day 1 and week 1 were studied.
Results:
No significant differences were seen in age and sex distributions, cataract grades, anterior chamber depths between the patients in control and CoQ10 groups (p>0.05). However, the mean increase in BCVA values was significantly higher for CoQ10 group on postoperative days 1 and 7 with respect to those in the control group (p<0,001, p<0,05). CoQ10 group had shown a significantly lower increase in CCT (p<0,01, p<0,001) and CV (p<0,01, p<0,001) measurements on postoperative days 1 and 7. The decrease in the endothelial cell counts (p<0,001, p<0,001) and hexagonality (p<0,01, p<0,001) were significantly lower in the CoQ10 group on postoperative days 1 and 7. There was no difference in IOP values between the two groups (p>0.05).
Conclusions:
We have shown that topical CoQ10 administration has a protective effect on the endothelial cells after cataract surgery and has speed up the visual rehabilitation.
