Abstract Details
Purpose:
to assess the protective effect of methylcellulose on corneal epithelium during cataract phacoemulsification in dry eye patients.
Setting:
SI “Zaporizhzhia Medical Academy of Post-Graduate Education Ministry of Health of Ukraine”
Methods:
Sixty-two patients (62 eyes) aged 52 to 84 were examined. Patients were divided into two groups. In the study group (32 eyes) methylcellulose 2% was applied on the ocular surface, in the control group (30 eyes) - the surface of the eye was irrigated by BSS solution. Tear break up time (TBUT), fluorescein cornea staining, cornea epithelium thickness, cornea thickness were analyzed in the preoperative period, 1 and 7 days postoperatively. The amount of irrigation fluid and CDE were analyzed in both groups.
Results:
There were no significant differences before and after surgery between both groups in cases where CDE was less 10. Analyses of differences between studying parameters compared to preoperative level revealed a statistically significant changes in the group with BSS where CDE was bigger than 10. The CCT and central epithelial thickness increased on the 50,5±8,0 µm and 4,0±0,4 µm in the study group and on the 131,8± 12,6 µm and 13,8± 1,8 µm in the control group on 1 day postoperatively ( P≤ 0,001).On the 7th day, the CCT and epithelial thickness gradually decreased but was greater than the baseline value in the BSS group, CCT returned to the baseline value at the 7 day in the Methylcellulose group. There was significant difference in the fluorescein staining on the 7 day in the BSS group.
Conclusions:
: Intraoperative use of methylcellulose during cataract surgery protect cornea surface in dry eye patients especially in patients with high CDE, whose surgical time was longer.
