Purpose:
The purpose of this work is to study the efficacy of Omega-3 Fatty Acid on dry eye following Phacoemulsification and it’s benefits to such cases .
Setting:
Mataraia Teaching Hospital
Methods:
Subjects were randomly allocated into two groups each group 25 eyes with total sample size 50 in both groups ,one group will receive omega 3 dierty supplement 1000 mg for who complaining of new onset dry eye symptoms with a history of recent phacoemulsification surgery with exclusion criteria (previous corneal refractive surgery ,Intraoperative complications,Glucoma ,eye trauma, )and the other group will not receive omega 3 supplement after phacoemulsification , all of them will undergo for the diagnostic tests ( Tear break – up time,Ocular Surface Disease Index ( OSDI )and schirmer test ) for 3 months post-operative
Results:
We note that there is improving for TBUT test in both control and treatment groups after treatment , but affect more significantly in treatment ( who take omega 3 supplements) than in control group ( artificial tears and anti-inflammatory only ) p=0.017, and for OSDI there is improving also in both control and treatment groups and significantly high in treatment group comparing with control group < 0.001 ,and for Schirmer there is no significant difference between two group p=0.186
Conclusions:
In this randomized clinical trial shows the effectiveness of omega 3 supplements in the management of dry eye syndrome after cataract surgery in terms of both subjective and objective measurements. Therefore, it could be safely added to the postoperative protocols following cataract surgery to reduce the incidence of post-operative dry eye syndrome .
