Survey of prevention of postoperative endophthalmitis after cataract surgery of central region in Thailand

Abstract Details
Purpose:
To study the current practices for preventing eye infection after cataract surgery in Thailand and identify variations in practice.
Setting:
Cross-sectional study via anonymous survey.
Methods:
A questionnaire survey was conducted with ophthalmologists practice in central part of Thailand in 2018.
Results:
A total of 72 (76.59%) questionnaires were received. The amount of cataract performed in each individual was more than 500 patients per year. The use of pre-op antibiotics was reported in 69.4%. Most of antibiotics use was quinolone group (37.5%). Pre-op application of diluted povidone-iodine on the conjunctiva was performed in 97.2%. No intracameral antibiotics or subconjunctival antibiotics were performed. An immediate single dose antibiotic with quinolone was reported in 51.38%. Postoperatively, 65.27% used steroid and antibiotic eye drop separately. Most of antibiotic also was quinolone group (33.3%) and used for 4 weeks (66.7%). No suture was performed. Most of respondent reported the incidence of endophthalmitis less than 0.1% (79.16%).
Conclusions:
This study reveals wide variations in pattern of antibiotics used by Thai ophthalmologists. The predominant methods of prophylaxis are preoperative quinolone. An Intracameral antibiotic was not the majority in practice. Most surgeons used a quinolone for postoperative prophylaxis.
