Abstract Details

Purpose:

To discuss the causes and consequences of "in-out" implantation, which happens mostly with 4 haptic IOLs.

Setting:

Szem-Med Bt, Pécs, Hungary

Methods:

More and more „4 haptic” PC-IOLs are on the market, including toric and multifocal lenses. Their centration and rotational stability is excellent if correctly implanted in the capsular bag. However it can happen, that one or more haptics may be left outside the capsular bag during IOL implantation. This is called ”in-out” PC-IOL implantation, which happens in small pupil cases and mostly (but not excusively) with 4 haptic IOLs.

Results:

”In-out” implantation of PC-IOL must be considered if PCO formation is very rapid after uncomplicated phacoemulsification, and if decentration and tilt of the PC-IOL, can be revealed (by slitlamp, UBM, OCT) causing distorted and poor vision.

Conclusions:

This paper will discuss the common causes of ”in-out” PC-IOL implantation, and the surgical techniques how to prevent it intraoperatively or how to treat it postoperatively.
