Abstract Details

Purpose:

To demonstrate the safety and efficacy of Refractive lenticule removal with Ziemer Z8 Femtosecond Laser for correction of Myopia.

Setting:

A Tertiary Eye care Facility Bharti Eye Foundation East Patel Nagar New Delhi 110008 India

Methods:

17 eyes of 17 patients with myopia were included in this study with10 males and 7 females aged 18 years to 24 years. Stable refraction for 1 year ranged between -2.5 D to -7 D (Av.4.08D) Spherical.3 eyes had astigmatism,1 with -2.0 D and the other 2 -1.25 D. Topical lignocaine followed by 0.5% CMC eyedrops was instilled just before docking the handpiece. 2 sidecuts of 3 mm were created in 12 eyes and 1 sidecut in 5 eyes. Blunt dissection on anterior plane followed by posterior plane was done to seperate the lenticule which was pulled outwith crocodile forceps.

Results:

Preoperative BCVA was 6/6 in 8 eyes, 6/9 in 6 eyes and 3 eye had vision 6/12. All eyes had an easy seperation and extraction of lenticule without any tear. All eyes were followed up on day 1,7, 30 and 90. At 3 months 14 eyes(82%) had spherical error upto -0.25 D, 2 eyes (12%) had -0.75 and 1(6%) had -1 D. Residual astigmatism was commensurate with preoperative except 1 eye where astigmatism was -3.0 D. 11(64%) eyes gained UCVA equal to Preop BCVA, 2 eyes (12%) gained 1 line and and 1 eye (6%) lost 1 line. 3 eyes with preop astigmatism had residual astigmatism equal to or less than preop value.

Conclusions:

The lenticule extraction for myopia with Ziemer Z8 Femtosecond laser is safe and accurate. There were no vision threatening complications observed in this study.
