Purpose:
To study the the distribution of corneal stress-strain index (SSI) in myopia eyes from healthy Chinese keratorefractive surgery candidates, and provide basic data for further study of its application in corneal refractive surgery and other corneal surgery fields.
Setting:
Chongqing Ophthalmology Hospital, Chongqing, China
Methods:
In this observational and cross-sectional study, the stress-strain index (SSI) of 1060 eyes from 530 patients were evaluated by Corvis ST (Oculus, Inc.). Keratometric readings, axial length and manifest refraction were also recorded.
Results:
Mean patient age was 27.4 years (range: 17 to 50 years). 42.6% were male, and 57.4% were female. Basically, the SSI in young and middle-aged myopic healthy Chinese showed a normal distribution, with a mean of 0.895 (range: 0.57 to 1.16) . The SSI was independent of corneal thickness, corneal diameter, myopia degree and axial length. Also it was shown to have no significant correlation with gender and left or right eye.
Conclusions:
The corneal Stress-Strain Index (SSI) measured with Corvis ST showed no correlations with corneal thickness, refractive state, gender and left or right eye. With this new corneal biomechanics parameter, the Corvis ST can provide clinicians with meaningful and comprehensive corneal biomechanical evaluation in real-time. The SSI will be very useful in corneal refraction and other corneal operations.
