Evaluation of dry eye after refractive surgery according to preoperative meibomian gland status

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To investigate the effect of preoperative meibomian gland status on dry eye symptoms after refractive surgery.

Setting:

The study was prospectively conducted at the Eye Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University.

Methods:

Seventy-one myopia patients (71 eyes) were recruited and divided into three groups according to the area of meibomian gland (MG) loss: Group 1 (no or minimal MG loss), group 2 (< 25%), and group 3 (25%~50%). Ocular surface parameters were measured preoperatively as baseline and 1 month, 3 months postoperatively, including ocular surface disease index questionnaire (OSDI), non-invasive tear film rupture time (NITBUT), Tear River Height Measurement (TMH) and Schirmer I test.

Results:

There were no significant differences between groups at baseline and no obvious change was observed in the MG status of all subjects. After surgery, results of NITBUT and OSDI scores got worse in all three groups at 1 month (P < 0.05), and the Schirmer I test was only significantly different in group 2 (n=28). Among them, NITBUT and OSDI scores in group 3 (n=22) were significant worse versus group 1 (n=21) at 1 month. No other difference was found at 1 month.

Conclusions:

Preoperative meibomian gland loss will affect the dry eye symptoms after refractive surgery, the MG status should be carefully evaluated before surgery.
