Post-surgical outcomes after clear lens exchange, comparing two trifocal intraocular lenses

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate visual acuity, visual function, and health related quality of life after successful bilateral clear lens exchange (CLE) comparing Acrysof PanOptic (Alcon) and FineVision (PhysIOL).

Setting:

This is a prospective observation study in the clinics of Medilaser Coronaria, Finland.

Methods:

Observational study of outcomes after CLE comparing two trifocal IOLs. 114 patients were assessed at post-surgery visits at 6 and 12 months, 60% of patients had PanOptix. The groups where equal in terms of gender (59/61 % female), age (57/58y) and need of near addition (2,2/2,1D). The main outcome parameters were LogMAR uncorrected visual acuity at distance (monocular UDVA 6 m), intermediate (binocular UIVA 63 and 100 cm) and near (binocular UNVA 40 cm). Visual function was measured with validated VF14 questionnaire. Health related quality of life was measured with D15 instrument (www.15d-instrument.net). Follow-up visits were 6 and 12 months.

Results:

UDVA was equal in both follow-ups, logMar range from 0.03 to 0.05, p ns. UNVA 40cm, was superior at 6 and 12 months with PanOptix, (logMar 0.04 vs 0.11, and 0.07 vs 0.11, p<0.05 for both). UIVA 63cm, PanOptix was superior at 6 months (logMar 0.05 vs 0.10, p<0.05), and equal at 12 months. UIVA 100cm was equal, p ns. VF14 was equal in both follow-ups (96.5 vs 96.0, and 96.0 vs 96.7, p ns). 15D score was equal (0.95 vs 0.96 and 0.95 vs 0.95, p ns). Both VF14 and 15D increased significantly from baseline with both IOLs.

Conclusions:

Clear lens exchange with trifocal IOL increased visual function and health related quality of life. Use of eyeglasses was minimal after surgery. Minor differences were measured at near and intermediate distant visual acuity with two trifocal IOLs however Acrysof PanOptix showed significantly better UNVA at 40 cm at both timepoints.
