Clinical and patient reported outcomes of different combinations of extended-depth-of-focus and diffractive IOLs

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare outcomes of 5 different combinations of intraocular lenses in presbyopic patients

Setting:

Private clinics, UK

Methods:

Presbyopic patients who underwent RLE with these combinations of IOLs were retrospectively compared: Group A–bilateral Tecnis Symfony IOL with micro-monovision aim (3,229 patients), Group B–bilateral Tecnis ZKB00 multifocal diffractive IOL with +2.75 D near add (6,138 patients), Group C-combination of Tecnis Symfony IOL in dominant eye and Tecnis ZKB00 in non-dominant eye (1,575 patients), Group D -combination of Tecnis Symfony in dominant eye and Tecnis ZLB00 diffractive multifocal IOL with +3.25 D near add in non-dominant eye (909 patients) and Group E – bilateral implantation of Tecnis Synergy IOL (250 patients). Three months outcomes were analysed.

Results:

All combinations of lenses achieved good distance visual acuity. Near visual acuity was the best in group D (92.7% achieved N6 or better binocular UNVA), followed by groups B, C and A (91.0%, 90.9% and 83.2% of patients achieved N6 or better, respectively). Groups C and D achieved the highest satisfaction rates with over 90% of patients being satisfied with vision in each group, and the two groups had also the lowest induction of visual phenomena. The outcomes of bilateral Tecnis Synergy IOL will be determined in the immediate short term. [subject to changes prior to presentation].

Conclusions:

While all groups demonstrated good outcomes, combining an EDOF and a diffractive IOL seems to have an advantage of improved near vision and lower incidence of visual phenomena.
