Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the optical quality metrics in patients with Form Fruste Keratoconus (FFKC) and patients with normal corneas using high definition double-pass system aberrometer.

Setting:

Ophthalmology Department, Refractive Unit, Shaare Zedek Medical Center, Jerusalem; Ophthalmology Department, Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center, Tel Aviv, Israel.

Methods:

Prospective and comparative study including 30 eyes of 30 patients with FFKC and 100 eyes of 100 healthy control patients that were analyzed using a high definition double-pass aberrometer. Measurements were repeated 3 times in each patient and the following optical quality metrics were collected and compared between both groups: Objective Scatter Index (OSI), Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) and Strehl ratio (SR) values.

Results:

There was a statistically significant deterioration in 2 out of 3 measured optical quality metrics of patients with FFKC as compared to normal corneas as followed: Mean OSI was 0.63±0.35 vs. 0.45±0.19 (p<0.01), mean MTF 39.06±9.06 vs. 44.57±5.93 (p<0.01), respectively. Mean SR difference was not significant between the 2 groups.

Conclusions:

Objective assessment using a double pass aberrometer might help identifying early optical quality degradation in FFKC patients as compared to normal eyes. It might be suggested as additional diagnostic tool for identifying earlier forms of keratoconus.
