Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate distance, intermediate, and near visual performance in patients implanted with a new aspheric presbyopia-correcting intraocular lens (IOL)
Setting:
Clinica Baviera, Aier Eye International, Spain.
Methods:
Twenty-one patients (forty-two eyes) were bilaterally implanted with the new Tecnis Synergy ZFR00 (Jhonson & Jhonson Vision care, Inc.) IOL after phacoemulsification surgery. No ocular comorbities nor astigmatism greater than 0,75 diopters (D) were present. Three months postoperatively, monocular and binocular uncorrected and corrected distance (at 4m) visual acuities, as well as monocular an binocular uncorrected intermediate (at 66 cm) and near (at 40cm) visual acuities were measured. Binocular defocus curves were also evaluated.
Results:
No intraoperative or postoperative complications occurred. After a three months follow-up, the mean monocular corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) were 0,03 +/- 0,05 (DS) logarithm of the minimal angle of resolution (logMAR) (ranging from 0 to 0,22). At a distance, all patients showed a cumulative binocular distance corrected visual acuity of 0,09 logMAR or better, mean 0,01 +/- 0,03 (DS) logMAR (ranging from 0 to 0,09). At near distance, patients showed a uncorrected binocular visual acuity mean of 0,06 +/- 0,07 logMAR. The uncorrected binocular intermediate visual acuity mean was 0,18 +/- 0,12 logMAR. Defocus curve showed a wide range of useful vision; with a peak of best visual acuity at distance and a second peak at 50 cm and with a smooth plateau up to 33 cm.
Conclusions:
The outcomes of the present study show that in patients without ocular comorbidities, the visual performance obtained with bilateral implantation of the new trifocal aspheric Synergy ZFR00 IOL is good at far, intermediate and near distance; providing patients with an extended range of focus.
