Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the clinical outcomes of patients who underwent cataract surgery with the implantation of a new Continuous-Range-of-Vision IOL (Synergy, J&J Vision).

Setting:

Hospital da Luz, Lisbon, Portugal

Methods:

This prospective case series included patients who underwent phacoemulsification with the implantation of the new Synergy IOL. 50 eyes of 25 patients were included, with 1-month follow-up period. The main outcome measures were uncorrected distance (UDVA), distance correct, intermediate (DCIVA) and near (DCNVA) visual acuities, spherical equivalent (SE) refraction, contrast sensitivity, the presence of dysphotopsia and the defocus curve.

Results:

The mean post-operative residual SE was -0.14  0.38 D. The mean UDVA photopic and mesopic was respectively 0.03  0.13 logMAR and 0.01  0.11 logMAR, DCIVA was 0.03  0.08 and 0.00  0.09 logMAR and DCNVA was 0.02  0.10 logMAR and 0.09  0.12. Photopic contrast sensitivity was within normal values for an age-matched population. The presence of dysphotopsia was low, with 26% of patients complaining of moderate photic halos phenomena. The defocus curve showed two peaks (0.00 and -3.00 D) with over 0.1 logMAR from 0.5 to -3,25 D of defocus. 100% of patients were spectacle independent and would do again the implant of this IOL.

Conclusions:

The new Continuous-Range-of-Vision IOL (Synergy, J&J Vision) offers a good visual acuity over 0.1 logMar from 0,5 to -3.25 D of Defocus, without compromise normal photopic contrast sensitivity and achiving 100% of spectacle independence. Halos where the more report dysphotopsia.
