Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate and compare the effectiveness of cataract surgery with implantation of a standard monofocal and a new monofocal intraocular lens with modified optical profile

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, Elisabeth-TweeSteden Hospital, Tilburg, The Netherlands1, Department of Optics, Pharmacology and Anatomy. University of Alicante, Alicante, Spain

Methods:

Prospective comparative randomised clinical trial enrolling a total of 140 eyes of 70 patients with ages ranging from 66 to 81 years old. All eyes underwent successful bilateral cataract surgery with implantation of one of two different types of monofocal IOLs: Vivinex iSert© IOL (Hoya) (70 eyes, 35 patients) and Tecnis Eyhance© IOL (Johnson & Johnson Vision) (70 eyes, 35 patients). Distance and intermediate visual acuity and refraction outcomes were evaluated during a 1-month follow-up

Results:

No statistically significant differences were found between IOL groups in postoperative logMAR binocular uncorrected (Eyhance -0.05±0.10 vs. Vivinex 0.04±0.12, p=0.283) (UDVA) and corrected distance visual acuities (CDVA) (-0.08±0.10 vs. Vivinex -0.06±0.09, p=0.933) as well as in uncorrected intermediate visual acuity (UIVA) (0.55±0.06 vs. 0.65±0.08, p=0.073). Furthermore, binocular distance-corrected intermediate visual acuity (DCIVA) was significantly better in the Eyhance group compared to the Vivinex group (0.57±0.10 vs. 0.74±0.12, p=0.046). A total of 100% and 81.3% of eyes had a postoperative spherical equivalent within ±0.50 D in Eyhance and Vivinex IOL groups, respectively

Conclusions:

The new monofocal intraocular lens with modified optical profile Tecnis Eyhance provides a very predictive refractive correction with an improved intermediate visual function compared to a monofocal IOL
