Abstract Details

Purpose:

This is a prospective, single-surgeon, single-center, clinical follow-up study whereby patients undergoing routine cataract surgery had implantation of hydrophobic monofocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) Micropure 1.2.3 (PhysIOL, Liège, Belgium) and PODEYE (PhysIOL, Liège, Belgium). One eye was implanted with Micropure 1.2.3, the contralateral eye of the same patient received PODEYE lens. The optical properties of the lenses are very compatible (hydrophobic, glistening free material). The main difference is the mechanical design of the haptics, that is not expected to have an influence on clinical outcomes. Visual acuities and contrast sensitivity after implantation of Micropure1.2.3 and PODEYE will be compared.

Setting:

Gemini Eye Clinic, Zlin, Czech Republic

Methods:

In this ongoing clinical study, 71 patients have been implanted with Micropure 1.2.3 and PODEYE lens as part of standard cataract surgery. Follow-up examinations included: photopic and mesopic uncorrected Visual Acuity (UDVA), corrected distance Visual Acuity (CDVA), photopic and mesopic Contrast Sensitivity. The current follow up times were 1 week, 1 month and 6 months postoperative.

Results:

The interim results of 58 patients at 6 months show mean refractive outcomes MRSE 0.03D±0.40 (Micropure) and -0.14D±0.40 (PODEYE). Mean Corrected Distance Visual Acuity CDVA in logMAR are -0.04±0.06 (Micropure 1.2.3) and -0.03±0.07 (PODEYE). Mean Uncorrected Distance Visual Acuity UDVA in LogMAR are 0.08±0.12 (Micropure 1.2.3) and 0.08±0.16 (PODEYE). The according monocular mesopic visual acuity outcomes are: UDVA: 0.27±0.14 and 0.26±0.14 logMAR for Micropure 1.2.3. and PODEYE, respectively; CDVA: 0.17±0.11 (Micropure 1.2.3.) and 0.16±0.14 logMAR (PODEYE). Photopic and Mesopic Contrast Sensitivity follows the expected course.

Conclusions:

Preliminary results using Micropure 1.2.3 and PODEYE show good restoration of distance visual performance under photopic and mesopic light conditions with a low incidence rate of PCO postoperatively. Longer follow up results of 12 months will be available for presentation.
