Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess visual outcomes, color perception, contrast sensitivity and spectacle independence in patients implanted with a new monofocal intraocular lens (TECNIS Eyhance IOL, Johnson & Johnson Surgical Vision)

Setting:

Laserlens I.M.H.N. Ioannina - Greece

Methods:

This prospective, nonrandomised, comparative study included 40 eyes of 20 patients to undergo cataract surgery with bilateral implantation of two monofocal IOLs: Group A, Tecnis Eyhance ICB00 (Abbott Medical Optics Inc.) 20 eyes of 10 patients and Group B, Tecnis ZCB00 (Abbott Medical Optics Inc.) 20 eyes of 10 patients. Monocular and binocular uncorrected and corrected visual acuities were evaluated, contrast sensitivity and color perception were measured at one postoperative month.

Results:

Monocular and binocular distance visual acuities were similar between groups, with near and intermediate visual acuity much better in Group A. Intraocular lenses did not determine a statistically significant variation in color perception (S Index) (ANOVA) p = 0.266 or in the perception of desaturated color (ANOVA) p = 0.156. The contrast sensitivity in both groups was better in the postoperative period. No halos, glare, and starbursts.

Conclusions:

The ICB00 monofocal model has a spherical posterior surface and a higher order aspherical anterior surface that provides a continuous change of the power of the lens from the center to the periphery which allowed us to bilaterally implement a satisfactory vision at different distances, with a very good contrast sensitivity. A complete independence of glasses and a high satisfaction score were achieved. It provided better vision at intermediate and close distances without inducing dyshothotopsies.
