Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate clinical and patient reported outcomes of a diffractive toric extended depth of focus intraocular lens (IOL).

Setting:

Private clinic and day surgery, Sydney, Australia.

Methods:

This single centre retrospective case series included 218 eyes of 109 patients undergoing lens exchange following cataract or refractive surgery. Of those investigated, 56 eyes of 28 patients received bilateral implantation of the AT LARA toric 929MP IOL and 108 eyes of 54 patients received bilateral implantation of AT LARA 829MP IOL. Others received a mix-and-match of non-toric and toric AT LARA. Post-operative outcomes at 3 months including visual acuity at various distances, manifest refraction, patient satisfaction and subjective quality of vision for the bilaterally implanted groups were analyzed.

Results:

Three month follow up of binocular distance visual acuities were ≤ 0.0 LogMAR in 89% and 96% of eyes for the bilateral toric and non-toric respectively. Binocular near visual acuities at 50-60cm were ≤ N8 in 83% of eyes for both groups. Over 85% of eyes in patients that received bilateral AT LARA toric 929MP were within ±0.50 diopters (D) of emmetropia and over 75% had a cylinder value of ≤ 0.5D at 3 months post-surgery. Further, these patients demonstrated high levels of spectacle independence for near and distance vision. Most (≥90%) patients felt that visual disturbances, including halos, glare, focusing difficulties and depth perception, caused little or no disturbance.

Conclusions:

The AT LARA toric 929MP demonstrates equivalence in visual outcomes to the AT LARA non toric 829MP IOL in this study and consistency with published outcomes on the AT LARA 829MP. This is the first demonstration that the AT LARA toric 929MP provides effective distance and near visual acuity in eyes with corneal astigmatism. Patient satisfaction was high with over 90% of patients expressing satisfaction with the IOL implanted.
