YAG capsulotomy rates between two types of trifocal intra ocular lenses

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare Nd:YAG capsulotomy rates following implantation of two different trifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs).

Setting:

Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi, Pakistan

Methods:

In this retrospective cohort study we included consecutive patients who underwent cataract surgery with a trifocal IOL from 1st May 2017 to 30th October 2019 at the Aga Khan University hospital, Karachi. Patients who either had an AT Lisa Tri or Alcon PanOptix IOL implant were included. The primary outcome measure was Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy. The rate of laser capsulotomy between the groups were compared using Wilcoxon (Breslow) and Mann Whitney U test. Survival/ failure estimates were calculated using the Kaplan Meier tests. A p value of 0.05 or less was taken as statistically significant.

Results:

A total of 328 eligible patients were identified. Nine patients were excluded due to incorrect procedure code or missing files. Out of the 319 eyes included in our study 180 received AT Lisa Tri while 139 of them received Alcon PanOptix Trifocal IOLs. A total of 12.2% (n=39) eyes had Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy procedure done. Among the AT Lisa Tri group 16.1% (n=29) underwent laser capsulotomy compared to 7.2% (n=10) in Alcon PanOptix group (p=0.016).

Conclusions:

In this study cohort, patients who were implanted with AT Lisa Tri showed significantly increased rate of YAG capsulotomy. We propose prospective randomized controlled trial to confirm these findings.
