Use of smartphone microscope in eye clinics

Abstract Details

Purpose:

Eye clinics may not always have accessibility to microbiology or pathology labs or microscopes. With the universal availability of smartphones, commercially available microscope attachments may be of immense utility to the ophthalmologists

Setting:

Sri Guru Ram Das Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Amritsar

Methods:

We report the use of a commercially available smartphone microscope for the diagnosis of a spectrum of ocular conditions

Results:

Smartphone microscope was helpful in diagnosis of Demodex blepharitis and to demonstrate the presence of hyphae in fungal keratitis. In addition, it was also useful in examining the histopathology slides when laboratory microscope was not available.

Conclusions:

Smartphone microscope can be a handy useful tool to ophthalmologists without any major additional investments
