Abstract Details
Purpose:
Novel Dry Eye Treatment (Blepharitis/Meibomian Gland Dysfunction)
Setting:
'- Vithas Eurocanarias Instituto Oftalmológico Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
- University Hospital Dr. Negrin Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
- Clinica Dr Ruiz Lapuente Barcelona
Methods:
Sequence of Plasma spark discharges generated by DC voltage. Spark discharges generate heat that warms the skin and tarsal conjuntiva or directly on the eyelid margin. With this medical device using plasma discharge, we can treating MDG with two different procedures, depending on the severity of the Meibomian Gland Dysfunction
Results:
We have treated 50 patients with different degrees of MGD, a single session with both techniques: acting on the free edge of the eyelid directly on the small orifices of the central canals of the meibomian glands open on the margin of the lid just in front of the mucocutaneous junction in the most severe, and on the skin and tarsal conjunctiva and using lower plasma intensity in the less severe cases, with improvement in more than 70% of the treated patients, maintaining the results at 3 and 6 months
Conclusions:
MGD afects more than 75% of all those with Dry Eye Diseases and it´s treatable
Pulsed Light and Thermal Pulsation has brought lasting relief for many patients with severe MGD. Plasma discharge is a novel option for treating MGD with at least similar results than those who have been presented by these procedures mentioned
