Abstract Details

Purpose:

To describe an innovative solution for obtaining wide field OCT images with a traditional OCT machine with minimal extra cost.

Setting:

A tertiary care Eye Hospital in North India

Methods:

Ten patients with pre-existing Diabetic Macular Edema were examined. A spectacle frame fitted with +20D lens in both the eyes was worn by the patients while undergoing OCT imaging. The image obtained thereafter was compared with the images obtained without wearing the spectacles.

Results:

The area of retina covered in the OCT images with the spectacles worn was much larger and covered almost the whole area within the vascular arcades, while that of OCT images without spectacles was limited to central macular area

Conclusions:

In patients with Diabetic Retinopathy, the macular edema may be present in the region which may not be covered in a single OCT image of macula by traditional machines. The light rays from a wider region are converged by the +20D lens, thus giving a wide field OCT image. This innovation increases the field of imaging, and thus can capture those areas which might have been missed earlier, without the need for investing a huge amount of money on a newer wide field OCT system while spending less than 20 Dollars on large spectacle frame with +20 D glasses.
