Evolution of the actual and potential retreatment rate in the last 10 years: results for the AMARIS since 2011

Abstract Details

Purpose:

The aim of this retrospective analysis is to evaluate how the number and the percentage of retreatments evolved during 10 years of treatments using the SCHWIND AMARIS system

Setting:

Muscat Eye Laser Center

Methods:

Treatments since 2011 have been audited, and the subset of retreatments has been evaluated. Treatments have been segregated by treatment year and refractive and visual outcomes have been evaluated “year by year” as an indicator of potential retreatment candidates (loss of 2 or more lines of VA, or 0.75D or more of residual optical blur).

Results:

The data of 29609 treatments could be retrospectively evaluated. Overall, at 3 months, 85% of the eyes evaluated achieved 20/20 or better uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA). 88% of eyes were within +/-0.13 D of the attempted correction, and 96% were within 0.25 D of astigmatism. Corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) improved in 37% of eyes. Overall there were 64 actual retreatments (0.22%). Accounting for potential retreatment candidates 241 treatments (0.8%) showed 3 lines worse of UDVA compared to preop CDVA; 305 treatments (1.0%) had a residual optical blur of 0.75D or more, and 72 treatments (0.2%) lost 2 lines of CDVA. Overall, 496 treatments (1.7%) could be identified as potential retreatment candidates. Only 13% of the potential retreatment candidates actually received a retreatment.

Conclusions:

From 2010 until now, in 10 years of review, we could not detect major sudden changes in the actual or potential retreatment rates, or any isolated peaks up or down in performance indicative of technical instabilities.
