Abstract Details

Purpose:

To report quality of vision (QoV) questionnaire results for high myopic SMILE between -9.00 and -13.00 D.

Setting:

London Vision Clinic, London, UK

Methods:

Prospective study of SMILE in 114 patients. Attempted SEQ was -9.00 to -13.00D, cylinder up to 5.00D. Patients were informed of increased risk of quality of vision symptoms. Patients completed the validated QoV questionnaire. Patient satisfaction scale was 0 (very dissatisfied) to 10 (very satisfied). Independence from glasses scale was 0 (completely) to 3 (barely). Quality of vision symptoms were evaluated for frequency (never [0], occasionally [1], quite often [2], very often [3]), severity (none [0], mild [1], moderate [2], severe [3]], and bothersomeness [not at all [0], a little [1], quite [2], very [3]).

Results:

At the time of writing, questionnaire data was available at 12 months in 85 patients (75%) and at 3 months in 20 patients (18%), with 9 patients currently pending questionnaire completion. Mean patient satisfaction was 9.30±1.18 (range: 2 to 10), 8 or higher in 93% and 7 or higher in 98% of patients. Mean independence from glasses was 0.26±0.57 (range: 0 to 3) with 95% reporting completely or almost completely and 1% reporting barely. A score of 3 (very often) for frequency, severity, and bothersomeness respectively was 15%, 5%, 5% for starbursts; 10%, 5%, 3% for glare; 5%, 1%, 2% for haloes; 4%, 1%, 3% for fluctuations; 3%, 0%, 5% for focusing difficulties; 2%, 2%, 1% for depth perception; 0%, 0%, 1% for hazy vision; 0% for blurred vision, distortion, and double vision.

Conclusions:

Satisfaction and glasses independence were very high after high myopia SMILE. The one patient with satisfaction score 2, after retreatment reported satisfaction 10. As expected, there was a small increase in QoV symptoms, mainly glare and starbursts, but no symptom was bothersome-3 in more than 5% of patients, and none of these patients were dissatisfied with the treatment overall [=7 or more for all patients other than one (=6)]. The acceptance of QoV symptoms for high myopic SMILE was high, and as shown previously, a major driver for patient satisfaction is low residual refractive error and visual acuity outcome.
