Abstract Details

Purpose:

To examine the results of ReLEx® SMILE technology for the correction of ultralow myopia.

Setting:

1 - S. Fyodorov Eye Microsurgery Federal State Institution, St. Petersburg Branch, 2 – North-Western State Medical University named after I.I. Mechnikov

Methods:

We used the ReLEx® SMILE technology on the femtosecond laser platform VISUMAX (Carl ZEISS Meditec) for the correction of ultra-low myopia with a spherical component from -0.5 D to -2.0 D and astigmatism (cylinder) from -0.25 D to -2.5 D in 64 eyes (32 patients, including 20 females and 12 males). It should be noted that the sphere- cylindrical sum of refraction in all cases did not exceed -3.0 D. Minimal lenticule thickness ranged from 15 to 30 microns. Follow-up period was up to 12 months.

Results:

Maximum lenticule thickness was 56.7±12.8 microns. Mean sphere-equivalent (SE) of the patients with ultralow myopia has changed from -2.01±0.88 D pre-op to -0.06±18 D in 12 months post-op. 12 months post-op predictability was within ±0.50 D in 59 eyes (92.2%), and ±0.75 D in all eyes (100%). 12 months after ultralow myopia ReLEx® SMILE surgery, the average efficacy and safety indices were 1.04 and 1.08, respectively.

Conclusions:

ReLEx® SMILE technology can be successfully applied for the correction of ultralow myopia and myopic astigmatism. It is effective, safe, stable and predictable keratorefractive procedure with the acceptable outcomes, good postoperative comfort and patient satisfaction.
