Purpose:
To study demographics details, risk factors, microbiological profile, and clinical outcomes in paediatric infectious and non infectious keratitis cases at a tertiary eye care centre in South India
Setting:
Aravind Eye Hospital and Post Graduate Institute of Ophthalmology, Pondicherry, India
Methods:
Retrospective analysis of all paediatric infectious and noninfectious keratitis patients was performed at a tertiary eye center from Jan 2018 to june 2020. Demographic details, risk factors, microbiology investigations, clinical course, and visual outcome were analyzed.
Results:
A total of 345 patients were analysed. Mean age was 10.52years. Visual acuity at baseline was 6/6 to PL+.F:M ratio was 1.04:1.Risk factors-no risk factor 204, surgery 7, trauma 80, exposure keratopathy 5, Vitamin A deficiency 11,Systemic illness 6,Syndromic association 10.Bacterial keratitis 76, Fungal 30,Viral keratitis 182,Acanthamoeba 4,Marginal keratitis 16, Toxic keratopathy 6,Pythium keratitis 7, Nutritional keratopathy 4,rubella keartopathy 2 and keratouveitis 6. Healed with Medical treatment 288, required AMG 11, Glue+BCL 7, kertoplasty 20.Anatomical outcome-No scar 146, Cornealscar 160,Pthisis-6, Endophthalmitis 5,Graft infection-5,Lost to follow up 23.
Conclusions:
Etiological for infectious and noninfectious keratitis in children vary depending on the geographical location and socioeconomic changes. Early and prompt diagnosis, meticulous management and close follow up can lead to good visual and anatomical outcomes
