Abstract Details

Purpose:

A new and innovative technique designed to facilitate yamani technique of scleral fixated intraocular lens

Setting:

Operation was performed at kasr einy schools of medicine, ophthalmology department. The operation was performed on 5 male aphakic patients There was not enough capsular support to implant a sulcus fixated intraocular lens in either of the patients.

Methods:

The limbus is marked at 3 and 9 o’clock. Additional markings are placed 2mm from the limbus on each side. Another two markings are placed 2mm superior to the previous mark on the nasal side and 2mm inferior on the temporal side in the right eye. A 23 gauge vitrectomy trochar is inserted in a lamellar fashion one on each side. A vitrectomy 23 gauge forceps is introduced through the port to grasp the haptics on each side and exit with the haptics. Cauterisation of both haptics is done at the end of the procedure and conjuntiva closed.

Results:

5 cases were done using this technique. All cases suffered no intraocular complications. The intraocular lenses implanted in all cases were well centred and stable. Visual acuity was satisfactory in all patients

Conclusions:

This modified technique proved to be satisfactory and helped in facilitating yamani technique. This allowed for easier access of both leading as well as trailing haptics. Visualisation throughout the procedure was also improved as the need to introduce a forceps to feed the haptics through a needle bore as previously described in yamani technique was not needed a step that proved to be difficult.
