ELP and refractive outcome after cataract surgery with and without pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PEX)

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the visual outcomes before and after cataract surgery with and without pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PEX).

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, Goethe-University, Frankfurt am Main, Germany

Methods:

In this prospective study, we compared the CDVA, SE, and the ACD (ELP) in 28 patients with PEX and 20 patients without PEX. The mean age was 74.7 ± 6.18 years and 72.5 ± 7.78 years, respectively. Patients were examined before surgery and at 3 months after cataract surgery. At the 3 months follow up we additionally obtained the target refraction. The ACD (ELP) was examined with the anterior segment tomography (Pentacam Oculus, Wetzlar, Germany). Objektive refraktion was performed using an auto kerato-refractometer (Topcon, model KR-800S).

Results:

Before surgery the ACD (ELP) was 2.56 ± 0.427 mm in the PEX group and 2.49 ± 0.318 in the control group. Postoperatively the ACD (ELP) was 4.25 ± 0.800 mm in the PEX group and 4.21 ± 0.789 mm respectively. There were no significant differences in ACD (ELP) between these groups preoperatively and the 3 months visit. The postoperative CDVA in the PEX Group was 0.76 ± 0.24 with a SE of -0.43 ± 0.83 and 0.80 ± 0.28 with a SE of -0.29 ± 0.44 in the control group.

Conclusions:

The parameters compared were not significantly different in PEX eyes compared to the healthy control group, neither before nor after cataract surgery.
