Abstract Details

Purpose:

Quality control and benchmarking of lens exchange surgery helps surgeons to compare the impact of IOL designs and materials on visual outcome but also to compare their results to the standard with the objective to help them to adjust their techniques for an improvement of the outcome.

Setting:

Web-based registry for German cataract and refractive surgeons

Methods:

The registry was established in 2014 and the data from 2018 are presented. The following parameters were documented: age, concomitant diseases and ocular pathologies, type of anesthesia, biometry data, type of incision, target refraction, lens fractionation method, implanted IOL power, IOL type and intraoperative complications. Postoperatively, corrected and uncorrected visual acuity, refraction, intraocular pressure and complications.

Results:

Data from 34 centers with 10,035 lens surgeries have been documented with a complete follow-up (mean follow-up 30 days) available for 8,882 cases. One third belonged to the age group 76 to 80 years and 57.9% were females. The preoperative corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA; decimal) was 0.5 or better in 60.6% of the cases. A CDVA of 1.0 and 0.5 or better at the last follow-up was achieved by 42.9% and 90.8% of all cases, respectively. Comparing targeted and achieved spherical equivalent, 64% of the evaluated eyes had a residual refractive error within ±0.50D and 89.9% were within ±1.0D.

Conclusions:

Taking together the preoperative, intraoperative, visual and refractive outcomes from surgeries in Germany, the results are comparable to the ones reported in other registries, namely EUREQUO, which is the registry with the most recent data and with a geographic location close to Germany.
