Analysis of Anterior segment biometric parameters using swept-source optical biometry and Scheimpflug-based tomography

Purpose:
To compare biometric parameters obtained by a swept-source optical coherence tomography device (SS-OCT, IOLMaster 700, Carl Zeiss Meditec AG, Germany) to those obtained by a Scheimpflug-based biometry device (Pentacam AXL, Oculus, Germany).

Methods:
Observation study with cataract patients who underwent biometric measurements with SS-OCT and Scheimpflug tomography. Measurements included axial length (AL), anterior chamber depth (ACD), and mean keratometry (K mean). Intraocular lens (IOL) calculations were performed using both devices. Pearson correlation coefficient and the 95% limits of agreement (LoA) were assessed. Paired t-test and Bland-Altman plots were used to assess differences between the devices.
Results:
65 eyes were incorporated in the study. Mean age was 678.7 years. No statistically significant differences were observed in AL (p=0.39), ACD (p=0.74), K mean (p=0.87). Mean IOL power using the Barrett formula (p=0.658) or the SRK-T formula (p=0.40) were not statistically different.
Conclusions:
Scheimpflug tomography and SS-OCT biometry showed high correlation in cataractous eyes.
In clinical practice, the devices appear to be interchangeable.
