Stability of biometry in patients with meibomian gland dysfunction

Purpose:

Accurate biometry is an essential and indispensable tool in preoperative cataract surgery setting to yield optimal postoperative refractive outcome. However, some recent studies indicate that preoperative biometry is influenced by dry eye disease (DED). Since meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) occurs in up to 86% of all patients with DED, it is seen as a major therapeutic target. Recently, Lipiflow® - a novel treatment method - became available. The present study aims to investigate the effect of the therapy of MGD using the Lipiflow® device on the stability of biometry and selection of IOL.

Setting:

Vienna Institute for Research in Ocular Surgery (VIROS), a Karl-Landsteiner-Institute, Hanusch Hospital, Vienna.

Methods:

31 patients suffering from DED caused by MGD will be enrolled in the study. One eye will be selected as study eye, the second eye serves as the control eye. Lipiflow® therapy is applied only to the study eye. Follow-up visits will be scheduled two weeks and three months after the treatment. OSDI evaluation, break up time and lid margin examination are performed during each study visit. In addition, biometry using IOL Master 700 is performed and repeatability of its measures and resulting IOL power will be evaluated.

Results:

Preliminary results will be presented at 38th ESCRS. Main outcome will be spherical/toric IOL power selected at baseline and three months visit.

Conclusions:

Dry eye significantly influence biometry readings. Previous studies report that patients with DED benefit from therapy before conducting biometry in preoperative cataract surgery setting. The present study will elucidate if treatment of MGD, using Lipiflow®, improve stability of biometry and how MGD might influence IOL selection.
