Abstract Details
Purpose:
To describe the improvement in Ocular Surface disease and aniridia associated keratoplasty after Descemet Stripping Endothelial Keratoplasty (DSEK)
Setting:
Southampton University Hospital
Aristotle University of Thessaloniki
Report of Case:
Congenital Anidia is a rare panocular condition affecting a wide range of eye structures from the ocular surface to the cornea, the iris, the lens and the macula1.
The cornea and the ocular surface are characteristically affected and the term Aniridia Associated Keratopathy is used to describe the progressive ocular surface pathology that greatly contributes to the reduction of the visual acuity of these patients. A 59-year-old female patient with congenital aniridia, that already had cataract surgery using an Ophtec aniridia sutured IOL (Ophtec, The Netherlands), was referred to my corneal service for progressive endothelial dysfunction. We were surprised to see that 12 months following DSEK surgery, there was a marked improvement of the Ocular surface and the Aniridia Associated Keratopathy that remains to date
Conclusion/Take Home Message:
DSEK although complex can lead to lasting improvement in Ocular Surface Disease and Aniridia Associated Keratopathy, leading to significant improvement in the quality of life of this challenging group of patients
