Cataract induced by eyelid cosmetic treatment with intense focused ultrasound: a case report

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To present the first case of an acute cataract formation developed secondary to an aesthetic eyelid treatment using Intense Focused Ultrasound (IFUS) energy as an adverse event.

Setting:

Ophthalmologic emergency department of the Sharee Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem, Israel

Report of Case:

A 45-year-old women immediately after receiving a cosmetic treatment with IFUS technology over the eyelids developed an acute, progressive, severe cataract with a unique shape. At SLB examination of the crystalline lens in the right eye four drop-like dense lens opacities aligned consecutively in a horizontal line together with a posterior capsular opacity were noticed and progressed rapidly within 4 days into a dense posterior cataract leaving the patient UCDVA from 20/20 prior to the event to 20/160. Posterior capsular integrity and intraoperative dynamics where not affected and phacoemulsification and IOL implantation were performed without complications restoring UCDVA of 20/25.

Conclusion/Take Home Message:

Safety and efficacy of IFUS has been studied on the neck and face, including the infraorbital area. It is our opinion that an ultrasonic probe applied around the eyebrow and the eyelid should be strictly forbidden to avoid eye damage. Cosmetic and ophthalmic health providers should be aware of the potential damaging effect of IFUS.
