Tear osmolarity before and after cataract surgery

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To find out the tear osmolarity of random cataract patients, without any subjective complaints about ocular surface disease, before and after surgery.

Setting:

Pauls Stradins clinical university hospital, Riga, Latvia.

Methods:

Randomly 42 cataract patients (42 eyes) were chosen. There were no subjective complaints about ocular surface disease from the patients. Tear osmolarity test was performed with TearLab 2 hours before the cataract operation. During preparation patients recived local anesthetic and midriatic drops. The cataract operation was performed in subtenon anesthesia with extracapsular phacoemulsification of the lens. Next morning the tear osmolarity test by TearLab was performed again. It is planned to gather tear osmolarity results from 1 week, 1 month and 3 months post operation.

Results:

From 42 patients 23 were female (54.76%) and 19 male (45.24%) patients, together 42 eyes measured. The average age of the patients was 69.3 years. The average tear osmolarity before cataract operation of the randomly chosen patients were 311.6 mosm/l. Only 6 (14.28%) from all the patients were in the range of normal limits accordin to TearLab guidelines. For 36 patients (85.72%) tear osmolarity was increased. Next day morning the tear osmolarity findings for all the patients (42 eyes) were below the normal range (<275 mosm/l).

Conclusions:

Most of the patients (85.72%) showed abnormal numbers of tear osmolarity before the cataract surgery. Only 14.28 % patients had the tear osmolarity in the range of normal limits according to TearLab guidelines. Next day after cataract surgery, all the patients (100%) showed the results below normal range in tear osmolarity test.
