Comparison of macular thickness analysis secondary to SICS and phacoemulsification technique: a prospective study

Purpose:

Evaluate and describe the thickness, characteristics and the evolution of the macula in the first 3 months of the postoperative period in eyes that underwent cataract surgery using the SICS technique. To compare these results with the control group (eyes that underwent phacoemulsification surgery). Effect of the cystoid macular edema on the visual outcome.

Setting:

Setting: Hospital General Universitario Gregorio Marañon, in Madrid, Spain, during the year of 2015.

Methods:

Methods: A prospective study that include 50 eyes in each group, the first: the SICS group, the second: the Phacoemulsification group. The surgeries were performed by expert surgeons and did not present intraoperative complications. The macular thickness and description were assessed on the 1st, 14th, 42nd and 90th day of the postoperative period. The macula was analyzed with the OCT Cirrus Spectral Domain. All the patients signed a consent. Inclusion criteria: patients who underwent cataract surgery using SICS or Phacoemulsification. Exclusion criteria: pre-existing macular pathology, significant ocular pathologies that can affect visual outcome, ocular trauma, previous intraocular surgery or laser.

Results:

Results: The visual acuity (VA) was evaluated using the LogMAR scale. The average preoperative VA by SICS was -0.6 and by Phacoemulsification was -0.5. The average postoperative VA by SICS was -0.1 and by Phacoemulsification was -0.1. The macular thickness increased in both groups, especially during the first 6 weeks. There was a significant difference between the macular thickness in the SICS group, which was thicker than in the phacoemulsification group, on the 1st, 14th and 42nd day of post-operative period. However, at the last day (90th) both groups show no significative difference between their macular thickness analysis.

Conclusions:

Conclusions: Our results showed that subclinical macular edema (SME), thicker in the eyes that underwent surgery using the SICS technique during the first two months, had no repercussion on the final VA (p<0,05). This was described by Chaudarie et al, who found that the SME was similar on the
