How are we doing for post-cataract surgery refractive outcome?

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To review the refractive outcomes of our post-cataract patients with reference to the national benchmark standards set by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, United Kingdom

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, St James University Hospital (SJUH) Leeds, United Kingdom

Methods:

All cataract surgeries performed at the SJUH, Leeds, between 1st January and 31st December 2014 were included in the audit. An electronic medical record system (www.medisoft.co.uk) was used to collect patient data including pre-operative and post-operative visual acuity (VA), ocular co-morbidities, biometry details, the model of intraocular lens and its A constant, formula used in intraocular lens selection, post-operative refraction and post-operative complications. Refractive outcomes were compared to the national benchmark standards set by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists.

Results:

A total of 4975 cataract surgeries were performed at SJUH, Leeds, between 1st January and 31st December 2014. 2680 cases (53.9%) had complete post-operative refraction. Post-operative VA of 6/9 or better was observed in 93.1% of our patients without ocular co-morbidities and 79.4% with ocular co-morbidities. 90.8% of our patients had achieved post-operative refraction within 1 diopter of the predicted target and 64.7% within 0.5 diopters. Both figures were higher than the benchmark standards of 85% and 55% respectively.

Conclusions:

The refractive outcomes of our post-cataract surgery patients exceed the national benchmark standards. We recommend the use of appropriate formula for the intraocular lens selection and optimising the lens’ constant to achieve the best possible refractive outcomes in cataract surgery.
