Comparison of optical performance and patient satisfaction with an extended-range-of-vision IOL and a trifocal IOL: a randomized prospective study

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate and compare the distance, intermediate and near visual acuity, patient satisfaction and contrast sensivity after bilateral implantation of Extended Range of Vision IOL (AMO Tecnis Symfony ) and a Diffractive Trifocal IOL (Zeiss AT Lisa tri 839).

Hospital of St. John, Vienna, Austria Krankenhaus der Barmherzige Brüder Wien

Methods:

In this randomized, controlled, prospective study, 30 patients (age range, 61 to 80 years) with bilateral senile cataract were enrolled. Healty eyes other than Cataract were selected. Subjects received either AMO Tecnis Symfony or Zeiss AT Lisa tri 839 in both eyes on same day and by same surgeon. Three months after surgery Visual acuity, Contrast sensivity test with Opthec 6500 were performed. A subjective questionnaire assesses the overall patient's satisfaction and the amount of photic phenomena for both IOL types.

Results:

Patients of both groups were very satisfied with their distance, intermediate and near vision.Patient satisfaction was high in all cases. In the post operative period no adverse events were observed. Tecnis Symfony subjects had better mesopic contrast sensivity levels at but did not reach statistical significance. Although glare and halos in both groups present ,90% of the Tecnis Symfony patients and 85.7% of the AT LISA tri patients would choose the same lens again.

Conclusions:

According to our results, both groups achieved an excellent visual acuity for all distances.
