Abstract Details
Purpose:
To compare cumulative dissipated energy (CED) of phacoemulsification in eyes with zonular weekness and control subjects.
Setting:
Ophthalmology clinic of Ulucanlar Eye Education and Research Hospital
Methods:
In current study total of 120 eyes underwent phacoemulsification, 22 of which had zonular weakness and 98 normal eyes as a control group were evaluated. Each eye operated with same device, same technique and by the same surgeon. CDE levels were reported and compared between two groups.
Results:
The mean CDE of total group was 11,82 +- 8,22 (0,01-44,72) while it was 15,16 +- 11,66 (2,37-44,72) and 11,06 +- 7,10 (0,01-33,68) in eyes with zonular weekness and in control subjects respectively. Even the CDE was higher in eyes with zonular weakness than that of control subjects the difference was not statistically significant. (p: 0,184 ) No one had any intraoperative complication in either group
Conclusions:
Phacoemulsification, in eyes with zonular weakness, need similar phacoenergy to normal subjects therefore this surgery is safe and effective technique as in high riks due to unsufficient zonular support. .
