Abstract Details

Purpose:

To demonstrate visual performance of the IC-8 small aperture IOL (AcuFocus, Irvine, CA) implanted in patients in whom a cataractous lens has been removed to correct presbyopia. Different and specific attention was applied to support at our best biometry best outcomes. The simple concept based on the opportunity to implant a new IOL technology only in the non dominant eye is really well accepted by surgeon : no patients or other eye doctors have the possibility to complain about the far visual performances of the dominant eye where was implanted the best technology available monofocal Iol.

Setting:

C.M.A. Centro Microchirurgia Ambulatoriale Monza , Italy

Methods:

21 patients with cataract , corneal astigmatism ≤ 1.75 , had IC-8 IOL implantation in the non-dominant eye and an aspheric monofocal IOL in the dominant eye. 3 patients experienced bilateral IC8 implants. Postoperatively, the following visual and refractive parameters were measured: distance (4m) near (40cm) and intermediate (70 cm) visual acuity, corneal topography and Acutarget analysis, contrast sensitivity , Hemifield Test and defocus curve. Regular follow-up examinations were performed up to 1 year after surgery. It was very important the opportunity to manage up 1.5 diopter of astigmatism without toric correction

Results:

At 12 months in the IC-8 eye, UDVA is 20/24 ± 2.24, UIVA is 20/29 ± 15.18 and UNVA is 20/46 ± 20.25. In the monofocal eye, UDVA is 20/20 ± 0.00, UIVA is 20/27 ± 4.31 and UNVA is 20/66 ± 26.43. Binocular UDVA is 20/20 ± 1.79, UIVA is 20/23 ± 2.89 and UNVA is 20/28 ± 4.04.

Conclusions:

The IC-8 shows excellent visual performance at 12 months following implantation. Best technology monofocal IOL was considered to be implanted in the dominant eye . IC8 Technology mixed with monofocal IOL in the dominant eye provides good far, intermediate and near vision . IC8 IOLs technology application could not be compared with standard distance monovision : minimum far vision with IC8 was 20/25. It was really helpfull to implant the pinhole IOLs in patients with astigmatism up to 1.75 diopters. The opportunity to not manage toric IOL axis was easier and faster.
