Refractive and visual outcomes after toric intraocular lens implantation in cataract patients: a case series from Lebanon

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate visual and refractive outcomes after toric intraocular lens (Acrysof Toric, Alcon) implantation in uncomplicated phacoemulsification cataract surgery.

Setting:

Advanced Eye Care Hospital, Naccach, Lebanon.

Methods:

This retrospective study included 164 eyes of 118 patients with corneal astigmatism of > 0.50D and cataract. All patients underwent regular uncomplicated phacoemulsification cataract surgery with in-the-bag implantation of toric intraocular lens (Acrysof, Alcon) between October 2011 and March 2015. Both refractive and visual parameters were documented and analyzed preoperatively and at 3 months postoperatively.

Results:

Mean age of patients was 67.8±12.8 years (47% males, 54% females). Mean corneal astigmatism was 1.67±1.12D. Postoperative uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) had a mean of 0.17±0.21 logMAR and best corrected vision (BCVA) had a mean of 0.09±0.20 logMAR. The mean residual astigmatism postoperatively was 0.69±0.65D and the mean sphere was -0.46±0.60D. Seventy-six percent of patients had a postoperative UCVA of 0.20 logMAR or better. When including only patients with low corneal astigmatism <1.00D (N=47), mean residual astigmatism was 0.48±0.38D with significant improvement (p<0.001) and mean postoperative UCVA of 0.09±0.10 logMAR.

Conclusions:

Implantation of toric intraocular lens to correct for even low levels of corneal astigmatism resulted in significantly improved refractive and visual outcomes. Therefore, we recommend the use of toric lenses to improve patient satisfaction and uncorrected visual acuity after cataract surgery.
