Abstract Details

Purpose:

Many studies present measurements of optical properties of IOLs. The outcomes of these studies seem to vary largely, depending on the test conditions used and/or the metrics being measured. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the optical properties of trifocal lenses and extended range of vision lenses when tested in clinically relevant eye models and conditions.

Setting:

AMO Groningen b.v., Groningen, Netherlands

Methods:

Optical properties of lenses were measured under two alternative sets of conditions. Firstly, MTF at a single spatial frequency was measured in green light in a model eye. These measurements followed the ISO standard for multifocal IOLs. Secondly, the area under the MTF curve was measured in white light in an eye model that is representative of the clinically measured spherical and chromatic aberration. Test lenses included trifocal lenses and diffractive extended range of vision lenses.

Results:

Through focus measurements of MTF at a single spatial frequency in green light in a model eye showed several peaks, the number of peaks depending on the spatial frequency and pupil size. All lens models showed a bimodal behavior under specific conditions. Generally, the measurements did not correlate, or correlated poorly with known clinical behavior. When measuring the area under the MTF curve, in white light in an eye model that is representative of the clinically measured spherical and chromatic aberration, the trifocal lenses exhibited a bimodal behavior, while the ERV lenses showed a continuous range of high optical performance.

Conclusions:

The results show that measurement results of optical properties vary largely, depending on the test conditions used and/or the metrics being measured. Measurements of through focus MTF following the ISO standard for multifocal IOLs do not correlate well with known clinical behavior. However, measurements of the area under the MTF curve, in eye models that include spherical and chromatic aberration confirm the differences seen in a clinical environment between trifocal and ERV lenses.
