Abstract Details
Purpose:
We aimed to present the epidemiology, clinical findings and results of the chemical burns of the eye.
Setting:
Yuzuncu Yil University Department of Ophthalmology
Methods:
Records of patients who admitted with chemical injury exposure of the eye between May 2012 and May 2016, evaluated retrospectively. Twenty seven eyes of 22 patients were included in this study. The age, gender, agent that is exposured, best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) in first visit and after treatment, follow-up time and complications were recorded.
Results:
Mean age was 21.27±16.60 (1-52) years. While the most frequent exposured chemical substances were lime (8 cases) and cement (4 cases) and battery fluid (2 cases). Average follow-up was 3.5 ± 5.68 weeks (3 days-5 months). Mean BCVA of 14 patients who could be examined were 0.43±0.41 (0-1.3) logMAR in the first visit and 0.34±0.48 (0-1.6) logMAR in the final examination. In final examination, BCVAs were below the legal limit of blindness in two of these patients (14.29%) and both of them were injured with lime.
Conclusions:
Chemical burn of eye is an emergency condition which can cause of visual loss. Contact area, pH, duration and penetration grade of damaging chemical substance are important for grade of eye injury. Necessary preventions should be taken to prevent exposure of eye in the use of chemicals.
